Version 4.8 Expands Scale-Out GRID Capacity to an 800TB Full Backup, Adds Bandwidth Throttling and Encryption for WAN Replication to a Disaster Recovery Site

London – April 21, 2015ExaGrid, a leading provider of disk-based backup storage, today announced the availability of version 4.8 of its software for the ExaGrid family of backup storage appliances. The new release increases the number of appliances to 25 in a single scale-out GRID, which increases full backup capacity by 78 percent and adds both bandwidth throttling and encryption during replication to further enhance ExaGrid’s stress-free backup solutions.

ExaGrid’s unique landing zone and scale-out architecture allow for faster backups, resulting in a shorter backup window, restores and VM boot speeds that are as much as ten times faster than inline deduplication appliances, and a fixed-length backup window as data grows. The overall cost is lower up front and over time as compared to the large brand vendors.

Version 4.8 of ExaGrid’s software provides:

  • An 800TB backup capacity: Up to 25 ExaGrid appliances can be mixed and matched in any combination in a single scale-out GRID. With 10 various-sized appliance models from which to choose, IT organisations can buy what they need, as they need it. ExaGrid’s largest configuration is 25 EX32000E appliances in a single GRID for a maximum full backup capacity of 800TB and an ingest rate of 187.5TB per hour.
  • Bandwidth throttle: Replication between ExaGrid sites across a wide area network (WAN) can be scheduled for a specific day and a bandwidth usage limit can be set for each scheduled period. The combination of scheduling flexibility and bandwidth throttling allows for the maximum efficiency of WAN bandwidth used for replication.
  • WAN encryption: Data can be encrypted during replication between ExaGrid sites. Encryption occurs on the sending ExaGrid site, is encrypted as it traverses the WAN, and is decrypted at the target ExaGrid site. This eliminates the need for a virtual private network (VPN) to perform encryption across the WAN. ExaGrid also offers encryption at rest for data stored on ExaGrid systems.

The version 4.8 software is available at no charge to all customers who have a valid maintenance and support agreement.

ExaGrid Posts Record Year in 2014 with Double-Digit Revenue Growth and Cash-Positive Status

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Largest independent backup storage provider continues momentum with double-digit, year-over-year growth and record revenues

London, Jan. 13, 2015 – Revolutionary backup storage provider ExaGrid Systems announced today that it had double-digit growth from 2013 to 2014, earning record bookings for its fourth quarter revenue and year. ExaGrid was also both cash and P&L positive for all four quarters in 2014 and for the year. The company consistently ranked ‘best at disk-based backup storage with deduplication’ by leading experts is positioned for a successful year in 2015.

The only vendor with a unique landing zone and scale-out architecture, ExaGrid offers the industry’s fastest backups; the fastest restores, recoveries, and offsite tape copies; VM boots in seconds to minutes; and permanently fixes the backup window length as data grows. ExaGrid also eliminates the forklift upgrades and product obsolescence of the big backup storage vendors.

Turning it up in 2014, ExaGrid highlights include:

  • Surpassed 8,000 appliances sold.
  • More than doubled the full backup capacity in its GRID architecture, announcing a 448TB full backup in a single scale-out GRID system.
  • Became the industry’s first tech company to have over 350 published customer success stories, more than all of its competitors combined.
  • Attained highest position in the visionary quadrant in the Gartner Magic Quadrant.
  • Took the majority of the top product positions in the DCIG under $50K and under $100K appliance categories.
  • Was the first vendor to integrate with the Veeam Data Mover.
  • Increased support to over 25 backup applications and utilities.
  • Signed Ingram Micro as a major distributor for North America.
  • Expanded sales channels in mainland China.

A Year of Technological Innovation
ExaGrid announced the company’s most innovative technology in 2014 with the release of EX32000E, was awarded a patent for “Method and Apparatus for Content-Aware and Adaptive Deduplication”, and entered into several new partnerships for software integration and increased flexibility for customers’ appliance needs.

EX32000E – The new appliance can take in up to a 32TB full backup and with 14 appliances in a scale-out GRID can scale to a 448 terabyte full backup in a single GRID system. A fully-loaded GRID has an ingest rate of over 100TB per hour, the fastest in the industry.

Adaptive Deduplication – This new approach is the best of all worlds. Inline deduplication impedes backup performance and stores only deduplicated data, resulting in slow restores, recoveries, offsite tape copies, and VM boots due to a compute-intensive and lengthy data rehydration process. Post-process deduplication allows for faster backups as well as faster restores and recoveries but waits until all backup jobs are complete to begin replication, resulting in a poorer disaster recovery point. Alternatively, ExaGrid’s Adaptive Deduplication technology writes the backups straight to disk for high performance, storing the most recent backup in its full undeduplicated form for fast restores, recoveries, offsite tape copies, and VM boots, and also providing a strong disaster recovery point by performing deduplication in parallel with backups.

ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover – ExaGrid and Veeam developed an integration that allows the Veeam Data Mover to run on the ExaGrid appliance. This greatly improves backup performance and decreases the time to perform a Veeam synthetic full backup by up to 6X.

Ten Mix-and-Match Appliance Models – ExaGrid now offers ten appliance models of various sizes that can be mixed and matched in a single scale-out GRID. An appliance of any size can work with any other appliance in a single GRID. This unique approach eliminates expensive forklift upgrades and product obsolescence.

Praise from the Experts
ExaGrid continues to receive accolades from renowned industry experts such as Gartner, DCIG, ESG, IDC, InfoTech, and Storage Switzerland. Gartner positioned ExaGrid first in the Visionaries quadrant of the first “Magic Quadrant for Deduplication Backup Target Appliances” in 2014. Gartner defines “visionaries” as companies that deliver innovative products with capabilities that are often ahead of the mainstream in the market.

According to Jerome Wendt, President and Lead Analyst of DCIG, “ExaGrid provides a true solution, with a leading-edge approach that really meets the needs of customers.”

Brian Garrett, Vice President of ESG Lab says, “ExaGrid’s landing zone and adaptive deduplication give ExaGrid a leg up on the competition.”

And Storage Switzerland’s Senior Analyst Colm Keegan says of ExaGrid’s architecture, “In addition to providing better investment protection, the ability to add nodes ‘on the fly’ enables data centre planners to perform non-disruptive upgrades to the backup environment. This means there is no need to plan for data migrations, which can be a big win for already overworked IT professionals.”

ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover Improves Performance for Veeam Synthetic Full by 6X According to New ESG Lab Report

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

Report Validates that ExaGrid’s Industry-Leading Architecture, When Integrated with Veeam, Accelerates Backups and Boots VMs from Backups in Seconds to Minutes

London, November 12, 2014 – Today, ExaGrid Systems, a leading provider of disk-based backup solutions, announced that prominent IT analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) has tested and validated the creation of Veeam synthetic full backups using the ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover, increasing performance by 6X and reducing backup times.

Detailed in the report, ESG tested the performance of the ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover to create a synthetic full backup on the ExaGrid landing zone, versus Veeam pulling the data from disk to the Veeam backup server, creating the synthetic full and then writing back to disk. The results were powerful: the ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover was 6X faster in creating a synthetic full backup.

Combining ExaGrid’s disk-based backup with deduplication system with Veeam Software’s virtual server data protection solution allows organisations to recover and boot VMs in minutes – speeds comparable to recovering straight from disk. The ExaGrid-Veeam Accelerated Data Mover is designed to make backups faster and shift the burden of backup processing off of production servers, putting it on the appliance instead.

The ExaGrid scale-out approach brings compute with capacity – adding processor, memory and bandwidth as well as disk – allowing the backup window to stay fixed in length even as data grows. This approach is unique to ExaGrid and makes it the only disk-based backup system that maintains a fixed backup window.

Enterprise Solution Increases Total Capacity by More Than 50% to a 448TB Full Backup in a Single Scale-out GRID System

With 14 in a GRID, New Appliance Offers 3x the Ingest Performance and 10x the Restore Performance of Large Vendor Solutions at Half the Investment

London, October 15, 2014 – Today, ExaGrid Systems, a leading provider of disk-based backup solutions, announced the largest, most powerful appliance in its arsenal of backup solutions with data deduplication: the EX32000E.

Leveraging the strength of ExaGrid’s scale-out GRID technology, the EX32000E can combine up to 14 appliances in a single scale-out GRID, allowing for a 448TB full backup in a single system, representing a 52 percent increase in total capacity. With 14 in a scale-out GRID, this increase positions the EX32000E as one of the largest full-backup target systems on the market, with 882TB of usable storage and over 1PB of raw storage.

The EX32000E has an ingest rate of 5.6TB per hour upwards to 7.5TB per hour in a single system depending on CIFS, NFS, Veeam Data Mover, or OST. With OST, the EX32000E has an ingest rate of 105TB per hour with 14 appliances in a GRID system.

This rate (105TB per hour) is three times the ingest performance of EMC Data Domain with Boost. And with ExaGrid’s unique landing zone, the most recent backups are kept in their full undeduplicated form for restore, recovery, and VM boot performance of up to ten times faster than inline deduplication appliances, such as EMC Data Domain, which only stores deduplicated data.

The new appliance, which houses 72TB of raw and 63TB of usable data, can take in a 32TB full backup undeduplicated in a front-end landing zone for fast restores and recoveries and maintain a long-term historical version in a deduplicated data repository.

A Growing Network of Partners and Support Understanding and appreciating the complexity of robust backup at organisations of all kinds, ExaGrid supports a growing number of backup applications and utilities. At the enterprise level, ExaGrid works with a number of solutions, including Symantec NetBackup, EMC Networker, IBM TSM, and CommVault Simpana. Leveraging ExaGrid with any of these applications gives IT departments the best of all worlds with:

  • The fastest ingest performance for short backup windows
  • The most recent backups in their native, undeduplicated form in the landing zone for fast restores, recoveries, and VM boots
  • A fixed backup window as data grows due to full appliances in a scale-out GRID with processor, memory, and bandwidth with disk capacity expansion

ExaGrid also announced support for additional backup applications and utilities, increasing the number of supported applications, utilities, and database dumps to more than 25. In addition to backup applications already supported, such as Veeam, Symantec Backup Exec, arcserve, HP Data Protector, Oracle RMAN, SQL Dumps, and many others, ExaGrid has added support for:

  • Symantec System Recovery
  • Unitrends Enterprise Backup
  • Unitrends Virtual Backup
  • Zmanda

Additionally, ExaGrid has reduced the form factor of two of its models, the EX5000 and EX7000 appliances, from 3U to 2U, saving valuable rack space in the datacentre.  About ExaGrid Organisations come to us because we are the only company that implemented deduplication in a way that fixed all the challenges of backup storage.
