Today ExaGrid Systems, Inc is a data protection success story. In the last seven years it has evolved from a group of people with an ambitious vision into the company that has the best-performing backup and restore solution on the market today.
ExaGrid entered the disk backup with deduplication market in 2006. Since then the company has revolutionized how organizations backup and protect their data. Its cost-effective disk-based backup systems help IT organizations solve two of the most pressing issues they face today: how to protect and manage an ever-increasing amount of data and, how to do so at less cost.
The company has achieved this by addressing four fundamental requirements:
- Handling relentless data growth
- Creating a consistent and short backup window no matter how much data grows in the future
- Restoring data quickly and accurately in the event of partial or complete system failures
- Delivering a solution that helps to reduce the cost of the backup infrastructure
Best-in-Class with ‘Champion’ status
So, today ExaGrid is ranked best-in-class by independent experts.[1][2]
But it wasn’t alone in creating this award-winning architecture. ExaGrid effectively crowdsourced its solution before crowdsourcing was invented. The company spoke with IT professionals at 100s of companies who detailed their persistent problems with relentlessly creeping backup windows.
A tale of two architectures
The result of this listening, combined with the company’s innovative thinking, is a unique scale-out grid-based backup solution that has no theoretical limits.
Why then does ExaGrid’s uniqe scale-out approach to backup and restore solve the problem forever?
There are two fundamental reasons.
First, our scale-out architecture handles data growth very differently. We add full server appliances with processor, memory, network bandwidth and disk into a scalable GRID system. As the data grows, so do all four resources. You don’t need to know up front what your future data growth will be as you simply add the appropriate resources accordingly.
Second, ExaGrid is the only solution that has a landing zone that stores the most recent backups in their complete form while all others only store deduplicated data which is also called de-hydrated data.
When it’s time to do a local restore and make an offsite tape copy ExaGrid has the data in its full form ready to go. For all the other solutions you have to wait for them to put the data back together again from the de-hydrated form before you can do a local restore to make at tape copy. As a result, ExaGrid restore and tape copy performance is significantly better.
The fundamental differences and the compelling case for choosing ExaGrid’s scale-out approach are covered in a separate paper that describes the competing architectures.
The elegance of ExaGrid’s architecture has enabled its customers to manage a consistent backup window regardless of data growth and regardless of the other changes in the infrastructure, including: the migration to virtual environments where ExaGrid is now recognised as the de facto leader in partnership with Veeam.[3] This proves the significant lifetime value and investment protection that ExaGrid provides and that no other architecture can match.
ExaGrid became the best at backup because it refuses to compromise over the 5 commitments it makes to its customers:
- No backup window growth regardless of data growth.
- The shortest backup window
- Fastest restores, tape copies and recovery from a disaster
- VM instant recoveries in minutes
- Lowest cost solution upfront and over time, with no forklift upgrades, obsolescence, and price guarantee
