Backup without compromise – De-risking data protection by solving the backup and restore challenge forever

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013

Today ExaGrid Systems, Inc is a data protection success story.  In the last seven years it has evolved from a group of people with an ambitious vision into the company that has the best-performing backup and restore solution on the market today.

ExaGrid entered the disk backup with deduplication market in 2006. Since then the company has revolutionized how organizations backup and protect their data. Its cost-effective disk-based backup systems help IT organizations solve two of the most pressing issues they face today: how to protect and manage an ever-increasing amount of data and, how to do so at less cost.

The company has achieved this by addressing four fundamental requirements:

  • Handling relentless data growth
  • Creating a consistent and short backup window no matter how much data grows in the future
  • Restoring data quickly and accurately in the event of partial or complete system failures
  • Delivering a solution that helps to reduce the cost of the backup infrastructure

Best-in-Class with ‘Champion’ status
So, today ExaGrid is ranked best-in-class by independent experts.[1][2]
But it wasn’t alone in creating this award-winning architecture. ExaGrid effectively crowdsourced its solution before crowdsourcing was invented. The company spoke with IT professionals at 100s of companies who detailed their persistent problems with relentlessly creeping backup windows.

A tale of two architectures

The result of this listening, combined with the company’s innovative thinking, is a unique scale-out grid-based backup solution that has no theoretical limits.

Why then does ExaGrid’s uniqe scale-out approach to backup and restore solve the problem forever?

There are two fundamental reasons.

First, our scale-out architecture handles data growth very differently. We add full server appliances with processor, memory, network bandwidth and disk into a scalable GRID system. As the data grows, so do all four resources. You don’t need to know up front what your future data growth will be as you simply add the appropriate resources accordingly.

Second, ExaGrid is the only solution that has a landing zone that stores the most recent backups in their complete form while all others only store deduplicated data which is also called de-hydrated data.

When it’s time to do a local restore and make an offsite tape copy ExaGrid has the data in its full form ready to go. For all the other solutions you have to wait for them to put the data back together again from the de-hydrated form before you can do a local restore to make at tape copy. As a result, ExaGrid restore and tape copy performance is significantly better.

The fundamental differences and the compelling case for choosing ExaGrid’s scale-out approach are covered in a separate paper that describes the competing architectures.

The elegance of ExaGrid’s architecture has enabled its customers to manage a consistent backup window regardless of data growth and regardless of the other changes in the infrastructure, including: the migration to virtual environments where ExaGrid is now recognised as the de facto leader in partnership with Veeam.[3] This proves the significant lifetime value and investment protection that ExaGrid provides and that no other architecture can match.

ExaGrid became the best at backup because it refuses to compromise over the 5 commitments it makes to its customers:

  1. No backup window growth regardless of data growth.
  2. The shortest  backup window
  3. Fastest restores, tape copies and recovery from a disaster
  4. VM instant recoveries in minutes
  5. Lowest cost solution upfront and over time, with no forklift upgrades, obsolescence, and price guarantee

ExaGrid Solves Data Growth Challenges for Backup and Restore

New ExaGrid EX21000E Appliance Delivers on ‘Backup Without Compromise’ Promise, and Proves Architecture Solves the Backup Challenge – Forever

Westborough, Mass., Oct. 21, 2013 – ExaGrid Systems, the company consistently ranked ‘best at backup’ by leading experts, extends its lead with its latest appliance, the EX21000E.

Like the entire ExaGrid backup family, the new appliance continues to do the inconceivable: it keeps the backup window fixed in time forever, and delivers the fastest restores – regardless of data growth. No other backup architecture can match this commitment, because only ExaGrid solves the compute problems associated with deduplication.

This newest addition to the ExaGrid family extends the company’s founding vision to remove the risk from data protection – and solve the chronic, debilitating and costly problems associated with constantly expanding business data growth.

The EX21000E scales to 210 terabytes with a 10-appliance grid – and provides 80 percent faster speeds, 62 percent more capacity and 10 percent more throughput per terabyte – all at a lower price point than ExaGrid’s EX13000E, released in 2011. The EX21000E also features an ingest rate of 4.32TB per hour, which increases to an ingest rate of 43.2TB per hour with 10 appliances in a GRID.

The new appliance is available immediately, and integrates with existing ExaGrid appliances seamlessly. The EX21000E can be mixed and matched in the same GRID with all previous ExaGrid models: EX1000, EX2000, EX3000, EX4000, EX5000, EX7000, EX10000E and EX13000E.

Architecture Matters: Compare Scale-Up versus Scale-Out
To work effectively, backup requires an architecture that deals with data growth and deduplication – which are the main drivers affecting the backup window, restore speed and IT budgets.

ExaGrid’s unique scale-out architecture adds computing power with capacity, combined with a unique Landing Zone, to solve the storage problem and the deduplication compute problem. Other available products, including EMC Data Domain, HP D2D, Quantum DXi and Dell 4100, rely on scale-up technology, limiting overall capacity and computing power, requiring costly upgrades regularly.

Backup Without Compromise
The EX21000E follows through on ExaGrid’s promise to deliver a permanent solution to the backup problem, and is standing by its five-point commitment for every deployment:

  1. No backup window growth regardless of data growth
  2. The shortest backup window
  3. Fastest restores, tape copies and recovery from a disaster
  4. VM instant recoveries in minutes
  5. Lowest cost solution upfront and over time, with no forklift upgrades, obsolescence and a price guarantee

ExaGrid’s solution, which was effectively ‘crowd-sourced’ by hundreds of IT professionals more than eight years ago, has more than 1,800 customers worldwide. The company’s highly scalable architecture is widely recognized as the market’s most cost-effective approach according to the industry’s latest reports.

Backup without compromise – see why ExaGrid’s scale out architecture works best

At ExaGrid’s stand you will be able to discover why ExaGrid’s unique scale out approach to backup solves the backup challenge forever. You will also discover why the alternative scale up architecture replicates the window growth issues associated with tape.

ExaGrid became the best at backup because it refuses to compromise over the 5 commitments it makes to its customers

  1. No backup window growth regardless of data growth.
  2. The shortest  backup window
  3. Fastest restores, tape copies and recovery from a disaster

  5. Lowest cost solution upfront and over time, with no forklift upgrades, obsolescence, and our price guarantee

Join our seminar session: Future proofed backup – pay only for now, prepare for tomorrow. Avoid ten pitfalls of disk based backup – Wednesday and Thursday 10.30 – 11.15 am – VLab Theatre
Presented by Andy Palmer and Graham Woods, ExaGrid

Exagrid helps businesses reduce their reliance on tape with existing backup applications by efficiently de-duplicating and replicating backup data on disk. In this session you will learn how their unique scale-out model gives a low entry cost whilst guaranteeing future scalability and allows customers to adopt a pay-as-you-grow approach to backup. You’ll also learn how Exagrid solves the backup challenge forever, unlike the scale up approach used by other vendors which only provides a temporary fix to window growth. Finally you will hear case studies of how ExaGrid has helped businesses regain control over their backup and restores while retaining a tight grip on their purse strings.
